Wild Roots Co-op

Ages 6-8

Wild Roots is a collaborative, nature-based learning community where homeschooled children ages 6–8 gather twice a week to explore, create, wonder, and grow together. Rooted in curiosity, exploration, and hands-on experiences, our primary goal is to nurture a deep, lifelong love of learning. We honor each child as a capable, whole person and support their growth academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively.

We partner closely with parents to form a caring, cooperative village that values kindness, respect, and shared responsibility. Together, we create a supportive network that helps every child grow deep roots in meaningful learning, confidence, connection, and a lasting relationship with the natural world.

Learning at Wild Roots

At Wild Roots, our goal is to support children’s learning in creative, hands-on ways. Throughout the year we weave together mathematics, literacy, science, the arts, music, and history through engaging, nature-based experiences. Activities may include:

  • Outdoor exploration and nature study:  observing plants and animals, seasonal changes, and ecological connections
  • Hands-on science: building simple machines, measuring, gardening, and exploring physics in nature
  • Mathematics in the world around us: counting, measuring, sorting, and pattern-finding
  • Storytelling and literacy: reading, creative writing, nature journaling, and oral storytelling
  • Art and handwork: drawing, painting, weaving, knitting, sewing, and crafting
  • History and cultural studies: exploring local history, folk traditions, cultures, and stories connected to the land and seasons
  • Cooperative games and group projects: developing social skills, problem-solving, and teamwork
  • Field trips: community service, trips to farms, forests, historical sites, and more

FAQ

Wild Roots is a nature-based enrichment program for homeschoolers ages 6-8 and their families, created to offer meaningful support along the homeschooling journey. It complements a wide range of educational approaches and is designed to be supplemental rather than a replacement for core academics. Whether your family follows a structured curriculum, a self-directed path, or a blend of both, Wild Roots provides hands-on experiences that bring learning to life through exploration, art, science, storytelling, and play. Together, children and families grow, share ideas, support one another, and cultivate curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong connection to the natural world.

Wild Roots is guided by a lead facilitator who plans and leads the weekly learning experiences, with support from parents as part of our collaborative community. While parents are not required to be directly involved in the classroom (creating flexibility for parents who work), there are many ways to contribute to the program and help it thrive. See “Parent Support” section below for more details.

Wild Roots meets from 8:30-12pm Tuesday and Thursdays at our main campus in Clarkson, KY. There is an optional extended day option from 12-2pm.

In addition, there may be optional field trips and meet-ups scheduled on non-class days.

See our school calendar below for full schedule and breaks

Main Campus address: 100 Wilderness Dr. Clarkson, KY 42726.

Wild Roots will be a tuition-supported program, with an ongoing goal of fundraising to increase accessibility for families while ensuring fair compensation for the lead facilitator. We are committed to balancing sustainability with inclusivity while maintaining a low student to teacher ratio.

Tuition is $140 per month

Optional extended day option is $50 additional per month

At Wild Roots, parents are valued partners in their children’s learning journey. They are invited to contribute materials, share ideas, and work alongside the facilitator for support in areas their child may be struggling in at home. Together, families and educators create a connected, nurturing village where classroom experiences and home learning reinforce one another, making every child’s learning meaningful, engaging, and tailored to their unique growth.

Every day is designed to integrate subjects in ways that are playful, meaningful, and rooted in curiosity, helping children build skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Each family will sign an agreement of shared values as a way to help establish a strong foundation for a healthy, respectful, and supportive learning community.

Support roles may include organizing occasional Friday field trips, planning special events or seasonal celebrations, gathering or preparing materials, helping with clean-up at the end of the morning, participating in work days, assisting with outdoor maintenance or garden care, leading a short nature skill or craft activity, or helping with communication. This flexible, supportive structure allows families to contribute in ways that fit their schedules and strengths, fostering a strong, connected community for both children and adults, and enriching the shared learning experience for everyone involved.
