Heart + Hands Art

Ages 6-12

An enriching art class designed to inspire within each child a deep reverence and love for creating as they learn new skills and build self-confidence.

These one-of-a-kind classes revolve around skills such as hand sewing, weaving, knitting, and felting. Handwork provides incredible whole-child benefits while children learn practical skills that can be carried into rest of their lives. Who knows, they may even find a lifelong hobby!

Our time begins with a drawing, chalk, or watercolor exercise and then we dive into a project. Projects are process-based and take more than one week.

As much as possible we use natural, quality materials such as wool, beeswax, and items from nature. Depending on the season and project, we may go foraging outside for some of our materials. All projects are the children's to keep.

A Few Benefits of Handwork:

Grows fine motor skills, strengthens concentration and hand-eye-brain coordination- these are all necessary skills for handwriting, drawing, and other activities that require dexterity
Develops patience and persistence
The repetitive nature of handwork is calming to even the most active of brains
Encourages self-confidence and appreciation for the arts
Develops mathematical awareness through counting and problem solving

Handwork Art, Spring Session

Project 1: Sewing Spring Birds

This spring handwork art is broken down into two 3-week long projects. The first one is sewing 2-3 bird plushies that will make great play accompaniments. This project will cover hand sewing in 3d and basic embroidery skills.

Thursdays 1-2pm CST (another class time will be added if this one fills)

Dates: 3/20, 3/27, 4/3

$50 for the project

Handwork Art, Spring Session

Project 2: Needle Felting Nests and Eggs

This spring handwork art is broken down into two 3-week long projects. The second one is needle felting wool nests, eggs, and or baby birds. This will make a great accompaniment to Project 1. This project will cover needle felting skills.

Thursdays 1-2pm CST (another class time will be added if this one fills)

Dates: 4/17, 4/24, 5/1

$50 for the project

Does a parent have to stay?

You are welcome to drop-off your child or stay on site. We ask that all parents watch from a distance. Feel free to bring a book to read, go on a nature walk, or bring handwork of your own. WI-FI is also available.

We welcome all families to stay and play after class in our nature play area so long as our rules and materials are cared for.

Can I bring along younger siblings?

Yes. They are welcome to play in our nature play area or quietly play indoors though they should not interfere or distract from the students art time. We ask that all attendees help maintain a calm and peaceful environment- one that allows the students to focus on their work (though there will never be a shortage of fun and laughter).

Where do these classes take place?

They take place from my home, which is located 12 mins outside of Leitchfield off of Grayson Springs Road. Our class is primarily indoors though we will sometimes go foraging for materials and when the weather and project allow for it we may move class outside.

What should my child bring?

They should bring a water bottle and be well-rested and ready to create!

What if my child is sick or we have to miss class?

If you will be missing a class due to illness or any other reason you must notify me via email or text with as much notice as you can give. This helps tremendously as I spend a good amount of time preparing/setting up materials. Ideally notice would be given with at least 24 hours though I understand things happen.

If your child is sick please keep them home. A child may not attend if they have or have had a fever in the last 24 hours or have any symptom of illness that may spread to others.

No refund will be given for missed classes. I will do my best to send home the project from that day the next week but this is not always an option.

If the teacher needs to cancel class due to personal illness or a personal emergency a refund or class credit will be offered.

What is your weather policy?

Class will be canceled in cases where severe weather makes travel unsafe. Parents will be notified via text/email. We will do our best to reschedule if possible. No refund will be given for classes canceled due to severe weather.
